2 min methods for body reconnection

Finding pockets of time to get out of our heads and tune into our physicality...

Mount Sapo is about the daily practice of soaking up our body’s sensations and noticing what otherwise goes ignored. Finding pockets of time to get out of our heads and tune into our physicality. It’s so easy to become disconnected from our bodies, we’re all busy people – so we’ve put together a few quick ways to help you listen in to your body, and get a bit of a reset. After a few weeks, you’ll really feel the cumulative effects of a daily practice.

1. Body Scanning

The sensations in our bodies can give us important information, so it’s worth spending two minutes once or twice a day (or more!) noticing what’s going on in your body with a quick scan. Even on the most manic days, taking a few minutes to recognise how your body feels, and releasing some of that tension can make a big difference.

  • Starting from the top of your head, imagine your focus flowing down your body. Think about each part of your body as you scan down, and pay attention to how you're holding that part of yourself. Does it feel tight? If so, let those muscles soften and relax.
  • Notice your breathing - is it shallow or fast? Slow your breath, let your lungs fill gently and exhale.
  • As you’re scanning your muscles, pay attention to your emotions. Do you feel anxious, excited, wired, numb? And if so, where are you holding that feeling in your body?

2. Cold-Water

Ending the shower with a blast of cold water for 10 seconds to a minute (or as long as you can handle) is a bracing way to really feel in your body. Cold water immersion increases blood flow, giving you a rush of energy and a heightened sense of awareness of your body's sensations. It also reduces inflammation, gives you a shot of endorphins and can even boost your immune system!

3. Self-Massage

Apply a generous amount of oil to your body, ideally on slightly damp skin after a bath or shower. Start at your feet and ankles and work your way up towards your neck and face. Take time to notice how each area feels as you massage it.

Use this as an opportunity to give attention to areas of your body that feel out of sorts, tight, tense or underappreciated. If you don't have lots of time, try to focus on massaging a different area of your body each day for a few minutes. It’s a small act, but you’ll still get a better connection with your body and a release of tension.
